At TU Darmstadt a 1 MWth pilot plant for has been erected and operated with the focus on chemical looping combustion of coal. The plant consists of two interconnected fluidized bed reactors that are fully refractory lined to minimize heat losses. The air reactor has an inner diameter of 600 mm and a height of 8.7 m; the fuel reactor has an inner diameter of 400 mm and a height of 11.4 m. The metal oxide is transported to the fuel reactor either by a screw conveyor or by a J‐valve. Heat can be extracted from the air reactor by movable cooling lances. Both reactors are equipped with propane burners for start‐up. The flue gases of both reactors analyzed by an online gas analysis before they are cooled down in heat exchangers and de‐dusted in fabric filters. Venturi‐type flow measurements are implemented to measure the flue gas flows. Furthermore, oxygen can be injected into a post oxidation chamber after the fuel reactor cyclone to convert unburnt compounds.
